I am Abdelrahman Salem and I come from Egypt but live in Dubai. When it comes to sci-fi entertainment and sports, I become passionate. My mother is a veterinarian. Ironically, she never allowed us to have pets but if I’m still thinking about getting a Husky.The atmosphere I lived in was abundant with diversity. consequently, I was taught to have an open mind from a young age. Because the “diversity of thought and culture and religion and ideas has been the strength of America”, I became quite enthusiastic to go there for my higher studies. (Gary Locke) Today, I am blessed enough to fly overseas and pursue my degree in mechanical engineering at Iowa State University. There I met a lot of interesting people some of them were a blessing others were a lesson. However, I’m always excited to learn more about anything and everything open to change. College is the best place to provide me such wants.
My portfolio speaks about my the works I’ve done for the course, English 250, throughout my fall semester and how my communication skills developed over that time. For every mode on WOVE, there will be a major assignment that contributes to it and a reflection of it.
Dear professor Stacy Petersen,
If there is something I truly understood the meaning of it must be the saying “nothing ever is, everything is becoming”. (Heraclitus) In other words, nothing stays the same everything keeps on changing. Only through patience and observation, I realised how powerful it is and how it applies to everything. It even came to develop my communication skills more.
Through this course, my communication process evolved, that my composing processes became faster and more efficient. I am now more aware, that if I ever wanted to transport any idea to a certain audience, I have to consider a few things. First, I have to understand my rhetorical situation from every side. Then I will use one of either of the approaches ethos, pathos, or logos to argue my state. I will put in mind that as I am communicating an idea, I will have to consider using one of the WOVE modes. From there I will start working wielding my work, to fit the minds of the audience, I am reaching out to. In my portfolio, I have set a certain work for every mode of WOVE, as seen in the menu above. W.O.V.E. stands for written, oral, visual, and electronic.
