Home Page

Within this ePortfolio are different examples of writing styles that I’ve used over the past few years which consist of written, oral, visual, and electronic communication, and self-reflections. The banner containing the headings, when hovered over, have sub-headings which will take you directly to any of the previously mentioned assignments. The banner is separated into five sections: home page, about me, ENGL 150, ENGL 250, and closing reflection. These divisions accurately portray the growth I have achieved as a communicator in multiple forms.

Under the home page (current page) one will find an introductory piece that will explain what is contained in each heading and subheading. Within the about me page is a short informational about the author, Alexis Glasby. These two pages are used to quickly familiarize the viewer with what information will be shown on the website and give a little background on the author.

The next section on the banner is ENGL 150 which includes work from my previous English class. The subheadings separate into W, OVE communication, and reflections. Underneath the W subheading, one will find the original essay over Jack Trice Stadium, original essay with professor’s comments, revised essay, and a link to the reflection over the assignment. After clicking on the OVE communication subheading, one will see a brochure and a link to a reflection for the particular assignment. Lastly, the Reflections subheading consists of all the self-reflections done on the previously mentioned assignments and all other assignments done within the class.

The ENGL 250 heading consists of work done this semester in my English course. When hovered over, the heading reveals four subheadings Written, Oral, Visual, and Electronic Communication. The Written Communication tab contains a summary over the Marilyn Monroe eulogy by Lee Strasberg, a revised summary, and an in-text written reflection over the assignment. In the Oral Communication tab, you’ll find a PowerPoint over the benefits of abortion and a reflection over the presentation. Within the Visual Communication, you’ll find a PowerPoint over the film Coco and a reflection over the presentation. Lastly, in the Electronic Communication section you’ll find a reflection over this website and the choices that were made when creating it.

Over the course of this class I have decided to keep my composing process the same: compile thoughts and information, pre-write, assemble all pieces of the assignment, edit, compose final draft. However, I did add a step in my process, work on each aspect of an assignment individually. In doing this, I am able to focus on each piece of a project without being distracted with the rest. Before I can work on independent pieces by themselves, I generate ideas on how to create the overall project. To do this, I write ideas that first come to mind when initially reading the rubric then proceed to narrow down topics. Once the paper is completed, I usually separate myself from the paper for at minimum 24 hours. Doing this helps me take a break from the assignment and return to it with fresh eyes. Occasionally when I finish a paper I’ll send it to a few friends to read over and catch any mistakes that I’ve missed.

Over the course of this semester, I have developed as a communicator. Being able to communicate with different types of people with different modes of communication has taught me how to address each audience I come across. For example, presenting to a small group of peers who have background knowledge on a topic vs presenting to a large who knows nothing about my topic affects the way one has to present and the amount of information given. Although I have made some changes, I believe I need to spend more time on oral communication. When presenting in front of a small group, I am able to view it as an informal conversation which makes it easier to communicate but not with larger groups. Larger groups tend to be more formal and require more explanation on a particular topic. Even with knowing all of my information, I get nervous being in large groups and speed through the information. Each of these assignments have strengths and weaknesses but in general, I believe I have tremendously improved in each area of communication which can be seen in the self-reflections I give on each topic
