Spring Semester Reflection:

Growth as a Communicator

At the beginning of the Spring 2020 semester I felt like I was already a good communicator. However, after this semester I realized that I did have somethings to work on.

This class has made me much more aware of how our communication styles should be different depending on the audience. The way we communicate should make the audience understand, think, or feel a certain way. Different tones, styles, word choices, design elements, and other aspects of communication can be used depending on what and who you are communicating with. An audience that knows very little about agriculture needs more explanation compared to myself. A young audience benefitting from lower level vocabulary choices is another good example.

My composing process was not changed much by this class. To generate ideas to write about I choose things that have to do with agriculture, other general interests of mine, or a topic that I want to learn more about. Another thing that has not change would be my use of outlines to help create my compositions. Outlines help me stay on track while writing my first draft. Generally my first drafts include a lot of extra information, because I try to get all my ideas into the outline. Revising my composition usually means taking out things that aren’t adding to the main point, developing a stronger thesis statement, and tidying up spelling and grammar mistakes. During this semester I had great experiences with the process of peer review. Peer review provided constructive criticism and helped me consider the audience’s view of my compositions better.

After this semester I would like to continue to think about my audience while communicating. Taking into account the way others view my communications will make my points stronger and more understood. My goal is to be aware of the best strategies to use while communicating with different people and groups.
