Introductory Reflection

This year in English I have broadened my skills as a communicator. Throughout various assignments I have learned to apply new strategies to make myself more effective as a communicator as a whole.  Over the course of the semester I have developed and fined tuned my skills within the W.O.V.E. areas of communication. It is interesting to look back and see how far I have come over the course of the semester in the various areas of communication.

As far as my communication habits go, my composing process has completely changed. When I first started the year I struggled to develop a paper that flowed smoothly. I would always write whatever was on the top of my head, and often that transformed to an incoherent paper. I learned that through the revision process and by reading my paper aloud it is much easier to detect spots that don’t flow as smoothly. In the future It will be much easier for me to spot mistakes in my paper. One goal I have to improve my communication process is to increase the time for revisions. By composing a speech or paper early on it will give me time to go back and fine tune various aspects of the paper itself.

When it comes to the areas of the W.O.V.E model, I consider myself to have improved drastically. I think in writing I possess the ability to discuss topics in great detail. I feel that that enables my reader to be able to understand the content to the level in which I understand it. I want  the reader to feel as though they are also an expert on the topic after reading my paper. In the area of oral communication, I think my greatest strength is my presentation. I am one who is not afraid to get up and speak in front of groups. I feel a sense of power and pride when I am presenting a topic that I consider myself knowledgable on. My greatest strength in visual communication is my ability to make short concise slides. I don’t like to have a lot of information on my slides, but rather bullets points that turn out to be speaking points. As far as electronic communication is concerned, I have learned that I am very good at finding credible sources through web searches. I have found that by searching countless pages of websites for hours as well as altering one or two key words to come up with a different search result greatly enables me to find numerous credible sources.

In conclusion I feel that I have drastically altered myself as a communicator throughout the course of the semester. I was able to improve upon my communication habits throughout the semester as well as develop as a communicator. I think that the various assignments throughout the year have enabled me to see my strengths and weaknesses in the various areas of communication.
