{"id":46,"date":"2016-09-16T16:45:18","date_gmt":"2016-09-16T21:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eportfolios.isucomm.iastate.edu\/franzend\/?p=46"},"modified":"2016-09-30T09:27:31","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T14:27:31","slug":"feeding-the-9-7-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eportfolios.isucomm.iastate.edu\/franzend\/2016\/09\/16\/feeding-the-9-7-billion\/","title":{"rendered":"Feeding the 9.7 Billion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beautiful tall grass prairie once spanned across the entire Midwest, dominating all other plant types and providing choice habitat for many animals both large and small \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/refuge\/Neal_Smith\/wildlife_and_habitat\/tallgrass_prairie.html\">https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/refuge\/Neal_Smith\/wildlife_and_habitat\/tallgrass_prairie.html<\/a>.\u00a0 Today, seeing prairie for more than a few acres is hard to imagine, as European settlement and agriculture has brought a momentous shift to the ecosystem we now call home.<a href=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.isucomm.iastate.edu\/franzend\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/736\/2016\/09\/download.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-48 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.isucomm.iastate.edu\/franzend\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/736\/2016\/09\/download.jpg\" alt=\"download\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The human population has been expanding rapidly for decades and is projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/development\/desa\/news\/population\/2015-report.html\">http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/development\/desa\/n<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/development\/desa\/news\/population\/2015-report.html\">ews\/population\/2015-rep<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/development\/desa\/news\/population\/2015-report.html\">ort.html<\/a>\u00a0 Likewise, the demand for food continues to increase.\u00a0 The more people this world holds, the more food we must grow, and that is why every last acre of Midwest soil is currently used to grow crops like corn and soybeans.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But is that fair?\u00a0 Why should humans get to use the land in whatever way they please?\u00a0 Shouldn\u2019t animals and their habitat be protected too?
