In 2011, I graduated from Brigham Young University with a double major in Philosophy and Portuguese. In the fall of 2014, I returned to BYU to pursue an M.A. in TESOL. Along with my coursework, I completed a thesis related to self-regulated learning. The primary purpose of my thesis was to create a self-regulated learning inventory. This inventory was intended to help students improve their ability to self-regulate their studies when learning English.

On completion of my M.A., I remained at BYU for two semesters to work as a writing instructor at BYU’s English Language Center. Following my time at BYU, I took a position as a Lecturer in UC Davis’ University Writing Program (UWP). My primary responsibility as a Lecturer at UC Davis was helping ESL students improve their academic writing skills. In addition to my positions at BYU and UC Davis, I have also worked as a curriculum developer, creating content for EnglishConnect, a remote English language learning program.

Following my time as a Lecturer at UC Davis, I returned to school to earn a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics and Technology at Iowa State University where I specialized in the use of corpus and computational methods to analyze linguistic variation in academic texts. I recently earned my Ph.D. after submitting and successfully defending my dissertation focused on disciplinary linguistic variation in NSF Project Summaries.

In addition to my research at ISU, I held two other roles as a graduate student. The first involved teaching a variety of courses for the English department. These included undergraduate writing classes, ESL academic writing courses, and Linguistics descriptive grammar courses. For my second role, I worked as an interdisciplinary and English language writing consultant for graduate students at the university’s Center for Communication Excellence (CCE). At the CCE, I was also responsible for organizing university-wide writing accountability groups and peer review groups as well as instructing research writing skills workshops.
