Oral Reflection

My Best Oral Analysis

I think my best example of using oral is my visual analysis video. I had to write a detailed script so that I could deliver it orally up to par. I had to make sure I spoke clearly into my computer which is something I struggle with since I speak very quickly.

Reflection

I chose my visual analysis video as my best example of an oral project because  it was the only one that I used oral communication and because I thought it was a unique project and I put a lot of work into it. When I started the project, I came up with a tentative schedule of when I wanted to accomplish each step. On other projects, I have made a plan before; however, I rarely stick to it. In this project I stuck to my plan and therefore I feel like it turned out better.

For this project, my audience was social media , specifically Instagram, users. I chose to analyze Jaden Smith’s Instagram theme. The audience was somewhat specific because if someone did not have Instagram, they would have a harder time understanding certain terms I used. Even some that have Instagram do not think very much about each post and may not understand what having a grid theme even means. My audience had to be people who are relatively Instagram savvy. The way I tailored the project toward them is by using terms they would understand and explaining things as if I was talking to them.

To make the actual video, I used iMovie and recorded my voice over the images. When I was creating it, I tried several different methods of how to record my voice. Weather to sit or stand and weather to use headphones or not. After trying different variations of those options, I decided that I would sit down and wear headphones in order to create the clearest sound. I think that was a good change because when I first started recording I was doing it without headphones, and it did not sound as crisp.

This project is an obvious demonstrated for an oral presentation. It’s a video where I am talking in it. Most projects I have done in the past in English classes do not involve speaking unless it is a presentation in front of the class. I liked that this project was like writing a paper, but I just essentially read it out loud.

Visual Analysis

For my visual analysis, I decided to analyze Jaden Smith’s Instagram page. I chose this because I felt like I had background knowledge about effectively using Instagram, and I also thought that Jaden had a unique Instagram.

I started by going through his Instagram page and screenshotting portions that were unique or specific to his Instagram. I noticed that most of it was very modern and simple. Because of that fact, I started by addressing who his audience is, which is millennials. According to Sprout Social, almost 60% of users on Instagram are between the ages of 18 and 29 years old. So millennials are using Instagram more anyway, and they are typically drawn to modern, aesthetically pleasing Instagram’s like Jaden’s.

A lot of my analyzing had to do with style. Smith’s Instagram is very much based on style and how the overall grid looks. I talked about his use of white photos in order to draw attention to one photo on the grid. That is very much a stylistic choice. Because he wants one photo to stand out, he makes all the picture around it plain white.

Another style choice Smith makes is the fact that sometimes his photos are split into three parts in order to accosted Instagram’s set up of three pictures going across the screen. I also talked about the downfall of doing that.

The next point I brought up was about his use of color themes, and how he often uses black and white to give his Instagram a clean look. I mentioned that he uses other photo themes besides black and white too.

The last point I made was about Smith’s poor caption writing. Captions can be very vital to an Instagram post, and Smith does not write very engaging captions which is a negative.
